Katowice

Katowice is the capital of Upper Silesia has about 322 000 inhabitants. The Silesia region is most known for its coal mines and steel plants. Here we shall also find interesting passages accompanied by numerous shops, galleries, fashion stores thickly filling ground floors, first floors and even the yards of old tenements. A characteristic feature of the market-place is the edifice of Stanisław Wyspiański Theatre of 1907 known for many interesting performances, receiving also theatres from many European countries. It is worth visiting the collection of the Silesian Museum in a building of 1899 with a precious collection of Polish painting and frequently changed temporary expositions. Let us have a look at broad Korfanty Alley at which big warehouses and hotels are situated. Its perspective closes with the so-called Spodek (Saucer) the Provincial Show and Sports Hall.
